Iyengar Yoga is the method that is taught by Yogacharya Sri BKS Iyengar of Pune, India. He was born on December 14, 1918, in Bellur, India and has studied and practised yoga for over 70 years. He has taught in all five continents and has made yoga accessible to everyone, no matter what their physical and mental ability.
He has written numerous books and runs the Ramamani Memorial Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India. His daughter Smt. Geeta and son Prashant Iyengar are also directors.
Students learn through asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control) as they become more experienced. Yoga practice brings energy and relaxation to the body and mind. It increases flexibility, strength, self-confidence, concentration, vigour and mental calm, all attributes that help a person through daily life.
Teaching within the Iyengar Yoga system is methodical and progressive, with an emphasis on safety. The system uses supports or ‘props’ to ensure that everyone is able to achieve the postures with their bodies in alignment according to their capabilities.
Iyengar Yoga is taught in over 40 countries with over 180 Iyengar Yoga Associations worldwide.
